We won't under-estimate Robins, says Darlington
Saturday 24 December 2011
SAINTS' coach Carl Darlington has warned his players not to underestimate struggling Newtown on Boxing Day, despite an unbeaten record at Latham Park which stretches back to 2001.
TNS head for the ground where they were given a reality check by the Robins when they were held to a 2-2 draw last season after twice falling behind and Darlington says: "There is a real edge to the game, it is a derby and both sides want the points for different reasons.
"We drew 2-2 this time last season and we will not be underestimating Newtown."
Darlington has backed namesake Alex to fill the boots of Matty Williams, who is out for the rest of the campaign with medial knee ligament damage, while former Newtown midfielder Nicky Ward is also ruled out with a niggling groin injury.
Meanwhile, Newtown boss Bernard McNally is not overawed by the prospect of two festive derbies between sides at opposite ends of the Welsh Premier table.
"We must look forward because we are in no position to dwell," he says.
"We have saved our best performances for the top sides this season and in TNS we could not have asked for a tougher end of the year."
Midfielder Jamie Price returns to availability but Wrexham loanee defender Max Penk continues his suspension.
Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
