Macca leads the way in Oval romp

WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE
CAERNARFON TOWN 0-5 THE NEW SAINTS
Saturday 24 Jan 2009 / The Oval
Caernarfon v TNS
Matthew Berkeley scores the Saints' third goal.
JOHN McKenna led the way with a brace in an outstanding first-half performance as The New Saints ran out comfortable winners.
They dominated the game from start to finish against the Welsh Premier's bottom club at a sun-drenched Oval, with 18-year-old McKenna opening the account after just four minutes when he headed a Craig Williams left-wing cross from eight yards out.
With Williams and Jamie Wood making hay down the flanks, John Leah soon added to the lead with a superbly-struck 22-yarder after Scott Ruscoe had headed back a cross into his path.
A through ball found Matthew Berkeley on the half hour and he nicked the ball over advancing keeper Lee Guinion, who would almost certainly have conceded a penalty had the ball not found the back of the net.
The Saints had already had two penalty claims waved away by referee Mark Petch, when first Berkeley and then McKenna were dumped in the box by clumsy challenges.
Former TNS defender Michael Jackson and keeper Lee Guinion then allowed John McKenna - who had earlier had a goal ruled-out by the offside flag - to streak through and lash the ball into an empty net on the stroke of half-time.
Saints continued to dominate after the break with Rob Williams hitting the side netting from a Guinion parry before sub Craig Whitfield did well to beat Andrew Jackson on the byline and cross for Ruscoe to add the fifth with an excellent shot from outside the box.
Whitfield should have added another, but fired over after another Guinion stop, and the hapless Canaries could have few complaints in a game where they never managed to threaten the visiting goal.
