TNS lack sparkle in Old Gold defeat

FAW WELSH CUP FOURTH ROUND
THE NEW SAINTS 2-3 CARMARTHEN TOWN
Saturday 31 Jan 2009 / Park Hall
TNS v Carmarthen
Matthew Berkeley sends a late effort wide.
THREE-nil winners on their only previous visit, Carmarthen showed their liking for Park Hall as they dumped TNS out of the Welsh Cup.
Jamie Wood gave the Saints a 20th-minute lead, getting the better of Nathan Cotterrall before beating keeper Neil Thomas from the edge of the box.
But it was all downhill after that, with Sacha Walters levelling with a superb 20-yard strike inside three minutes.
Craig Hughes had already spurned two good chances to give the Old Gold the lead, screwing his shots across the face of goal, but he made no mistake shortly before half-time with an angled shot from a similar position to his misses.
The Saints pressed hard in the second-half and the visitors were indebted to their keeper, who did well to tip Conall Murtagh's effort over the bar as it headed for the top corner.
Scott Ruscoe fired two 20-yarders straight at Thomas and Carmarthen then hit TNS on the break, a left-wing cross finding Hughes, who headed past Paul Harrison for his second.
Thomas again came to the rescue to deny Ruscoe but, although Matthew Berkeley finally found the target with three minutes remaining, it came to late to save the day.
