Steve Evans
Steve Evans is back!
IN the biggest move of the January transfer window, Welsh international Steve Evans has returned to the Saints.
The central defender spent seven seasons at TNS after previous experience with Crewe and West Bromwich Albion, arriving in time to win a Welsh Premier championship medal in 2000 and later adding another three.
He scored 24 goals from 142 league appearances, appearing in four Champions League ties - including both legs against Liverpool - and two Uefa Cup ties.
Voted Welsh Premier player of the season by the league managers in 2004/5, he was selected for the Wales semi-professional side but, after attracting the interest of then Wrexham boss Denis Smith, after impressing in a Premier Cup semi-final against the Reds at the Racecourse and signed a two-year deal at The Racecourse in June 2006.
The 29-year-old featured regularly during his first season in League Two making 40 league and cup appearances with Smith saying "he has been outstanding for me since coming into the League" and won recognition from Wales boss John Toshack, winning his first full international cap in a friendly against Liechenstein in November 2006.
He has made seven appearances for his country with Toshack saying: "Steve's in a difficult situation at the bottom of the league with Wrexham, but he's come into our last two games and not put a foot wrong. He handled all the aerial stuff and has shown he can step up a level."
Since the arrival of manager Dean Saunders, Evans has found it difficult to secure a regular first-team place and TNS moved-in with an offer which has been accepted.
"We started Steve's career and we are delighted he has come back to the club to continue it," says club managing director Mike Harris.
"Steve still has a great deal to offer and will be a big asset."
