Ladies on their way to Wembley

TNS Shrewsbury Town WFC are on their way to Wembley after winning the FA Umbro Fives Midland finals, a national five-a-side tournament with teams from all over England.

TNS were the only entrants in the Shropshire section of the Umbro 5s, so they automatically qualified through to the Midlands regional finals which were held at Star City in Birmingham.
The hardest job for the TNS managers was selecting a squad of only seven players out of many talented ladies, the chosen ones were Tammy Evans (GK), Finola Corley, Sally Jones (captain), Alicia Robinson, Abi Cottam, Vicky Gutteridge and Emily Ridge who were all magnificent throughout the day.
TNS arrived in torrential rain with conditions absolutely horrendous and, to make things worse, it was held outdoors, luckily on Astroturf.
They were placed in a pool of teams from Stoke, Birmingham and Leicester, finishing top of the group unbeaten having scored 11 goals and conceding only two, going through to the semi finals where they played a Hereford team who held TNS to a 2- 2 draw.
TNS came through to make the final score 4-2 in extra-time, with superb goals from Jones, Robinson, Corley and Cottam.
TNS then took centre stage knowing they were only 12 minutes away from Wembley, their opponents were a talented group of girls from Leicester who had also gone through the group stages unbeaten scoring many goals on the way.
TNS could not have wished for a better start when Cottam gave them a lead as early as the second minute, doubling the lead on four mins, with stan-in keeper Evans making some superb stops against a side totally stunned by the Ladies' fluent pass and move football.
Robinson then dribbled her way through to make it three on six minutes. The Leicester side did get a consolation goal, but TNS played out the last few minute to claim their place in the National FA Umbro Fives Finals to be held at Wembley on Saturday 20th June 2009, where they will compete against the best five-a-side teams in England, a superb achievement for all the girls involved, who all fully deserve to play on the famous Wembley pitch.
