Convincing win at Market Drayton
Convincing win at Market Drayton
Tuesday 28 July 2009
PRE-SEASON preparations continued on Tuesday night with a convincing 3-0 win for The New Saints at newly-promoted Unibond League South outfit Market Drayton.
The Saints were quick out of the blocks at Greenfields Lane with Matthew Berkeley heading the opening goal in the fifth minute after a good cross from Chris Seargeant out on the right.
It could well have been all over by the interval as TNS dominated, with Ryan Marriott only denied by a smart save and Scott Ruscoe just wide with a header from a Craig Williams free-kick.
Half-time substitutions disrupted the Saints' rhythm and they survived a couple of scares, with Paul McMullen's header rattling Parl Harrison's crossbar following a corner, and Duncan Horler's effort hitting the foot of a post as Drayton upped their game.
But the Saints regained control when Seargeant crashed home an eight yarder after good work by Berkeley.
Home defender Paul Bowyer was red-carded as the last man for pulling down Berkeley, but Alex Darlington's free-kick was beaten away.
But John McKenna sealed the win in stoppage time with a well-taken goal from Darlington's through ball.
