Jones keeps Saints' title dreams alive
Jones keeps Saints' title dreams alive
Sunday 28 March 2010
A GOAL from Craig Jones gave The New Saints a crucial victory over title rivals Llanelli in Sunday's live TV showdown at Park Hall.
A perfectly-weighted pass from Matthew Berkeley paved the way for Jones to toe-poke the ball past Reds' keeper Ashley Morris in the 66th-minute to secure the spoils.
In a game that was far from a classic, TNS had come close to taking the lead immediately after half-time, when Wyn Thomas deflected a Jones shot onto the foot of his own post.
In a nervy first-half for the hosts, Chris Sharp saw his shot easily held, while Morris denied Berkeley in a one-on-one.
The Llanelli defence survived an early onslaught in the second period, with a Jones overhead kick cleared to Sharp, whose follow-up shot was also beaten away.
Berkeley was wide with another attempt after a one-two with Sharp, while Scott Ruscoe also failed from a Tommy Holmes cross.
The visitors rarely threatened, but sub Jordan Follows fluffed his shot from a good position in the closing minutes.
TNS are now seven points clear at the top, but the title is still Llanelli's to lose as they have three games in hand.
