Two-goal starlet Lukaku sinks TNS in Brussels

Constant Vanden Stock Stadium

THE New Saints lost the second leg of their Champions League tie in Brussels 3-0 to exit the competition 6-1 on aggregate.

Anderlecht had opened their domestic league campaign on Saturday with a 4-1 win over newly-promoted Eupen, so there was no disgrace for the Welsh Premier champions in going down by a similar margin.
Indeed, until the arrival of 17-year-old Belgian superstar Romelu Lukaku as a second-half substitute, the Saints had rarely been seriously troubled after conceding an early goal.
After weathering some early Anderlecht pressure in the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium, Tom De Sutter gave Anderlecht a 17th-minute lead after being set-up by American Sacha Kljestan.
Matias Suarez then fired wide of the far post after beating Steve Evans in the box while, at the other end, Barry Hogan sent a speculative 30-yarder over the bar after Scott Ruscoe's effort had been charged down following a Jones cross.
Jamie Wood got a great cross into the back post but Chris Sharp, who was ruled offside anyway, saw his header miss the target.
Thomas Chatelle provided a great opening with a right-wing cross, but De Sutter mishit his shot into the ground and over the bar.
Early in the second-half, a shot from Chatelle was deflected narrowly past a post for a corner but Lukaku made an instant impact when he was released from the bench with two goals inside six minutes.
The huge-framed youngster first found space in the box to latch on to a Roland Juhasz ball and fire into the net, before beating his marker on the edge of the box to curl another effort past Harrison.
But the Saints' keeper remained defiant and pulled-off a great stop to keep out a thunderbolt effort from Lukas Maracek and TNS bowed-out of the Champions League with their heads held high and now progress to the Europa League play-offs.
