Davies realistic after Anderlecht defeat

Mike Davies

MANAGER Mike Davies was in realistic mood after watching his side lose 3-0 to Anderlecht in front of 22,000 fans at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels.

"I'm delighted for the lads, what a fantastic place to come and pit yourself against some of the best players in Europe and I think we've done ourselves proud," he said.
"We've got a young squad and we've just got to use this as a positive and build on it and just learn from the experience.
"When you put the two leagues together you have got to be realistic and the best team won at the end of the day and there's no other explanation for it.
"I think we've got to be delighted with what we've done and the way we've played and take a lot from it.
"We had every intention of trying to get something from the game, we approached it in the right way, but the class was there to see from Anderlecht tonight and we've just got to learn from this and move on."
Although the Saints can now look forward to yet another European tie - this time in the Europa League play-offs, Davies is looking no further than Prestatyn Town a week on Friday.
"We did OK, we had a couple of half chances, but overall the scoreline doesn't lie," he added.
"We've got to use it as a stepping stone, the Welsh Premier starts a week on Friday and we've got to focus on that.
"It's early days in the season and hopefully it's going to be a good one."
It has been a baptism of fire for the 31-year-old in his first few games in charge: "I'm learning all the time and what better place to learn than a place like this.
"There's a bit of disappoinment in the dressing room but we need to re-focus and move on from here.
"Anderlecht have got a fantastic squad and it's great for our lads to be on the same pitch as their players and use it to learn from.
"The lads have worked their socks off, they've done exactly what we asked of them and now's the time for them to enjoy a couple of Belgian beers."
