Saints left fuming by late penalty award
Friday 17 September 2010
THE New Saints were left fuming with the match officials after seeing victory snatched from their grasp by a late and highly-debatable penalty decision at The Airfield.
Goals from Matty Williams and Richie Partridge had given TNS a deserved 2-1 lead which reflected their domination of possession when the Wingmakers were awarded a spot kick in the 88th-minute for an innocuous challenge by Barry Hogan on Carl Owen.
Referee Kevin Parry waved play on, but then pointed to the spot on the intervention of a linesman and, after the protests had died down, Mark Allen fired past keeper Paul Harrison.
Williams had opened the Saints' account on 40 minutes, firing home from close range after Airbus keeper Kristian Rogers could only parry a 25-yarder from Danny Holmes.
But a stroke of misfortune handed the hosts an immediate equaliser when an attempted clearance from Holmes rebounded off Steve Evans and flew past the stranded Harrison.
Partridge restored the lead four minutes after the break with a superb individual effort, curling the ball into the far corner from outside the box.
Stunned by the late equaliser, Saints poured foward in search of a winner but, when Jones was pulled down in the home box, referee Parry was unimpressed and the final whistle signalled the end of a frustrating night for manager Mike Davies and his players.
