Wood on fire but Saints miss their chance
Wood on fire but Saints miss their chance
Tuesday 21 September 2010
JAMIE Wood found his shooting boots to put the Saints in control of their League Cup quarter final first leg within the first half hour.
But, after going two goals to the good, TNS let Airbus UK Broughton off the hook and failed to add any further goals.
Wood opened the home account on five minutes when he chased a long ball and outpaced his marker before planting a shot past keeper Callum Hawthorne.
And, when he netted with aplomb again with a 16-yarder from Matthew Berkeley's pass, a big score looked on the cards.
But the Saints failed to make the most of their opportunities, with Marcus Giglio earlier missing from close range and Wood himself denied in a one-on-one with the keeper.
Berkeley was narrowly wide with a spectacular overhead kick after the break and then headed against an upright from a right-wing free-kick.
Craig Williams fired straight at Hawthorne after being put clear by a through ball from Alex Darlington, who was unlucky to see his own lobbed effort rebound off the crossbar.
Sub Chris Sharp missed a golden opening with his first touch and Chris Seargeant's shot after a surging run into the box was palmed away for a corner.
Several other chances went begging and the Saints almost paid the price in stoppage time when keeper Paul Harrison got some rare action to deny Nick Rushton an away goal.
