Frustration as league cup final called-off
Sunday 23 January 2011
PLAYERS, officials and supporters of both sides were left frustrated after the Loosemores League Cup final between The New Saints and Llanelli was postponed 90 minutes before kick-off.
There had been no public indication that the showpiece at Aberystwyth Town's Park Avenue Stadium was in any doubt, with supporters of both sides already at the ground when referee Brian James deemed the rock-hard and bumpy surface unplayable.
Indeed, a phone call to Park Avenue at one o'clock confirmed the game was "definitely on".
But James called the game off, deeming it "too hard for player safety added to which further frost would start to settle during the game".
No new date has been announced for the game, which is likely to revert to its traditional early-spring slot.
The Saints are next in action on Saturday (January 29) when they face Rhyl at Belle Vue in the Welsh Cup fourth round (3.00pm).
