Harrison villain to hero in cup victory

Paul HarrisonPAUL Harrison went from villain to hero as The New Saints lifted the Shropshire Senior Cup at the first time of asking.

The Saints beat AFC Telford United 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out in front of a crowd of 803 at the New Bucks Head, after the game had ended deadlocked at 1-1 in 90 minutes.
Leading 1-0 in the closing minutes, the Saints had one hand on the cup when Harrison dallied on the ball in his own box and was robbed by Dwayne Samuels who rolled the ball into an empty net.
Within minutes, the keeper had atoned for his calamity, saving penalties from Craig Farrell and Alex Meechan, and Scott Ruscoe sealed the victory with the winning spot kick.
TNS had taken the lead after 18 minutes when Chris Williams split the Bucks' defence and Chris Sharp sent a measured chip over keeper Ryan Young from the edge of the box.
Harrison had already denied Ryan Valentine at point-blank range but Saints gradually took control and Alex Darlington forced a smart save from Young, while Craig Jones went close with a near post flick.
Harrison produced another good stop to send a James Reid volley into the side netting in what proved to be the last notable chance of the first half.
A low-key opening to the second period produced little in the way of chances for either side, but Harrison dealt well with a Meechan effort, while Jones could have extended the TNS lead only to be denied by Young.
With Steve Evans and man-of-the-match Phil Baker dominant at the back, the hosts struggled to make an impact and the cup looked headed for Oswestry in normal time until Harrison's late howler set-up the penalty shoot-out, which saw successful kicks from Matty Williams, Craig Jones and Chris Sharp alongside Ruscoe's winner.
