Saints into second place after Bangor success
Saints into second place after Bangor success
Saturday 10 September 2011
THE New Saints marked what could be their final visit to Farrar Road by beating Bangor City 3-0 to move second in the Welsh Premier table.
It capped a great eight days for the club which brought three wins and three clean sheets against three of the clubs considered to be among the main title rivals.
Goals from Steve Evans, Greg Draper and Matty Williams sealed the win, but TNS rode their luck in the first half after an unmarked Evans had headed them into the lead from Chris Seargeant's right-wing corner after just three minutes.
City's Craig Garside had a goal ruled out by referee Kevin Morgan and Alan Bull hit the crossbar from 18 yards after being released by Sion Edwards.
In between, Craig Jones should have scored when put through by Alex Darlington but, after beating two defenders, he fired over the bar.
When keeper Paul Harrison flapped at an Edwards' cross, a Chris Jones shot was cleared off the line by Aeron Edwards and Les Davies then sent his 12-yard header onto the angle of bar and post from a Chris Roberts cross.
In a bright start to the second half, the hosts' shooting let them down with Neil Thomas well wide of the target, Jones firing over at the far post and Shaun Pejic sending a free header well over the target.
Nicky Ward, who left City in acrimonious circumstances this summer, arrived to a chorus of boos, but when he freed Tom Roberts, the youngster got to the byline before crossing to give Draper the simplest of tap-ins on the hour for his third goal in three games.
Deflated by the second goal, Bangor rarely threatened thereafter although, when Harrison missed a cross, Phil Baker was forced to head Pejic's effort for a corner.
And, when Ward dispossessed Michael Johnston inside the Saints' half minutes from time, Matty Williams raced 40 yards before coolly slotting a 16-yard past Lee Idzi.
Sgorio's Malcolm Allen handed the man-of-the-match award to youngster Tom Roberts, who has deputised so ably for the injured Chris Marriott in the last two games and gave an assured performance.
