Bala's first defeat leaves the Saints in top spot
Sunday 18 September 2011
THE loss of Bala Town's unbeaten tag on Sunday means that The New Saints top the Welsh Premier table for the first time this season.
The Lakesiders went down 4-2 at home to Llanelli leaving them with a goal difference of plus nine, one less than TNS.
Town had not conceded a goal for 537 minutes prior to kick-off at Maes Tegid, but it took the Reds just six minutes to breach their defence when a long ball forward from Kris Thomas found Rhys Griffiths in space and the striker beat advancing keeper Terry McCormick.
Seven minutes later, Griffiths headed home unmarked at the near post from a right-wing corner.
The game looked over on the hour mark, when the ball broke free from a Stuart Jones tackle on Griffiths and Craig Moses hammered the third.
But Bala gave themselves hope by striking back within a minute through Liam Loughlin, only for Griffiths to complete his hat-trick with another header from a Lloyd Grist cross seven minutes later.
Sub Rhys Darlington scored the goal of the game with a superb effort into the far corner four minutes from time, but it was too little too late for the hosts to maintain top spot.
