Saints regain the summit despite missed chances

TNS v Port Talbot

THE New Saints gained revenge for an early season defeat with a 3-2 home win over Port Talbot Town to return to the Welsh Premier summit.

But the Saints failed to make the most of the numerous chances they created and almost paid the penalty as the Steelmen twice hit back.
All they had to show for an opening quarter of constant pressure was a fine individual effort from Craig Jones and they to wait until the hour mark before Scott Ruscoe hammered a 16-yarder after good work by Greg Draper.
Countless chances went begging in the opening stanza with Draper close to at least a hat-trick. He was twice denied in one-on-ones with keeper Bartek Fogler, who then saved three more efforts in quick succession from the Kiwi frontman.
Martin Rose, on as a substitute for the injured Cortez Belle, missed a good chance to equalise early in the second-half before Jones headed over the angle from a Ruscoe cross at the other end.
The second goal appeared to have settled the contest, but the nerves began to jangle when Paul Cochlin pulled a goal back for the Steelmen with a header from Lee John's free-kick.
TNS regained control when Alex Darlington profited from more persistence by Draper to net with a 12-yarder and Oliver Bowen's stoppage time goal, his first in the top flight, came too late to affect the outcome.
