Strikers Carl Lamb and Kevin Townson, and midfielder Steven Beck, started for the Bloods as they overcame Chesterfield 2-1 in a second round replay at the Butchers' Arms. Bad weather and floodlight failure had twice forced the second round fixture to be abandoned, but goals from defender Sean Newton either side of half-time set-up an away tie at Ipswich Town on January 3. The first attempt to stage the replay was abandoned with the Spirites leading 2-0, while the drawn game at Saltergate had produced one of football's bizarre moments. Droylsden protested furiously when Chesterfield's Jack Lester lobbed the keeper from a throw-in after Droylsden had put the ball out of play for an injury. The home side then allowed Steve Halford to walk unchallenged into their half to tap the ball in to the net to level the scores again. And, in yet another twist on Wednesday morning, the FA announced that it was investigating Droylsden's apparent fielding of an ineligible player as two-goal hero Newton should have been suspended for the match. Beck left the Saints in September after more than five seasons in which he scored 27 goals from 87 Welsh Premier appearances. Lamb spent 18 months with the club, scoring 10 from 13, while Townson's brief spell towards the end of last season yielded five goals from six league starts. |
