The Welsh Premier - the national league of
Wales - is scheduled to start 2004/5 with 18 clubs.
Airbus UK have won promotion from the Cymru Alliance in the north,
with Llanelli AFC returning after an absence of 12 months as champions
of the Welsh League in the south.
Seven times champions Barry Town finished bottom, after a season of
serious financial difficulties, and were relegated despite appeals
to the Welsh Premier board and the FA of Wales.
There is no route for promotion from the Welsh Premier, although the
champion side is entered in the Uefa Champions League, with two clubs
entered in the Uefa Cup and one in the InterToto Cup.
Although only one club was relegated at the end of 2003/4 to increase
the size of the league, two clubs are normally demoted, to be replaced
by the champions of the Welsh League (south Wales) and the Cymru Alliance
(north and mid Wales).
This is provided those clubs have applied for membership of the Welsh
Premier and meet the League's ground criteria.
If both these conditions are not met, the club(s) occupying the relegation
spot(s) remain in the Welsh Premier.
