FAW Premier Cup Group A: Away - Park Avenue
WITH £15,000 up for grabs for qualification to the quarter finals, Ken McKenna's decision to leave leading scorers Jamie Wood and Michael Wilde on the bench may yet prove costly.
Saints had more than enough chances to have this match wrapped up by half-time, but a combination of poor finishing, dogged defending and fine saves from Aberystwyth keeper John Worsnop saw them only level at the break.
Ten minutes into the second half, TNS lost Gary Brabin, dismissed for a senseless retaliation after an innocuous tackle by Bari Morgan.
Although playing against 10 men did little to improve the home side's attacking prowess, the loss certainly hindered Saints and in the end they were glad to settle for a point, where three were on offer earlier on.
The best chance of the night fell to Steven Beck, who found himself one on one with Worsnop after 65 minutes, but he shot against the keeper's feet from point blank range.
In the first 20 minutes, Brabin could have put a positive stamp on the match. His powerful 20-yard header from Naylor's corner was saved by Worsnop and two further efforts went close.
Aberystwyth relied mainly on the long ball, which was too often over-hit, leaving dangerman Williams starved of possession.
Lawless had a couple of efforts in the first period and Williams' only real opening of the night was deflected for a corner.
The result leaves the 'group of death' still wide open and TNS needing wins at both Bangor and Caersws to be sure of progressing to the next stage of the competition.
