Only pride at stake in Newtown clash
Tuesday, 06 October 2021 08:55
ALREADY qualified for the quarter-finals, The New Saints face a dead rubber in the Loosemores League Cup at Newtown's Latham Park on Tuesday night.
With the Robins unable to reach the last eight even as one of the best group runners-up, the tie will almost certainly see several first-team regulars rested from both sides.
However, with this weekend's scheduled Welsh Premier fixture at Porthmadog postponed, the Saints next game is a week on Saturday when Bala Town visit Park Hall.
So management duo Andy Cale and Mike Davies may be tempted to give several players some match practice with a 10-day break before the next competitive action.
Porthmadog's decision to seek a postponement of the game after the clubs failed to agree a late switch to Sunday is strange, in view of the fact that four other games scheduled for Saturday go ahead as planned at Airbus, Connah's Quay, Newtown and Port Talbot.
The re-arranged date will almost certainly be in midweek and is hardly likely to attract a larger crowd than it would have done on Saturday, despite live TV coverage of the Finland v Wales match.
