Ladies lose opener at Crewe

TNS Ladies started their new campaign with a very disappointing 2–1 defeat at Crewe.
A bright start in which TNS dominated the early exchanges saw Abby Francis chase down a long ball over the top from left back Emily Whitfield and she beat the hesitant keeper to give the visitors the lead.
Winger Emily Ridge nearly doubled the advantage when her 25-yard effort hit the crossbar and bounced to safety. But, within two minutes a rare attack saw Crewe level.
The half-time talk was all about how TNS could break down Crewe’s five-player midfield and a very narrow back four on a very small junior-like pitch.
TNS started the second half very much as they had finished the first, again dominating possession without breaking down the resilient Crewe defence.
Francis and Kim Bebbington both went close together with some long range efforts from captain Sally Jones, but it was another defensive lapse that gifted Crewe the lead.
TNS spent the remainder of the half pressing for the minimum they deserved, but Crewe held-out for the three points.
TNS hope to turn things around on Sunday when they entertain Rotherham United at Park Hall (2.30), all support welcome.
TNS Ladies: V Farrall, K Bebbington, S Skelton, C Canlett, E Whitfield, S Davis, A Robinson, S Jones (cap), C Cassidy, A Francis, E Ridge. Subs: S Burke, A Tomei.
