Saints continue cup defence at Talbot
Tuesday 10 November 2021
THE New Saints continue the defence of their Loosemores League Cup trophy when they head to Port Talbot Town on Tuesday night.
Andy Cale's men have already lost 2-0 in a Welsh Premier fixture this season at the GenQuip Stadium, a venue which has not been a happy hunting ground in recent years.
In a repeat of the 2006 final, which the Saints won 4-0, this is the first leg of the semi-finals, with the return a week on Wednesday.
In last season's semis, TNS lost 2-0 at Neath, but went on to record a 3-0 home win in the second leg before beating Bangor City in April's final.
The Steelmen are in confident mood after winning their last four games and manager Mark Jones is taking the tie seriously.
"Some people consider this a second rate competition," he says.
"But we are now at the semi-final stage and will be looking to take a step towards a place in the final.
"The New Saints are the current holders of this trophy and we know it will not be easy but we have already beaten them here this season and will be confident in our approach as ever."
With a tough league fixture at Llanelli on Sunday, the Saints' team selection will be interesting. Steve Evans and Scott Ruscoe were rested from Friday night's 4-0 home win over Elements Cefn Druids, but could earn a recall for some or all of tonight's tie.
