Cup win a perfect wedding present
Wednesday 28 April 2021
RETAINING the Loosemores League Cup on Tuesday night was the perfect wedding present for new manager Mike Davies.
The Saints ensured that the prize they won a year ago remained in the Park Hall trophy cupboard by beating Rhyl 3-1 at The Airfield, thanks to a brace from Chris Seargeant and a goal from Jamie Wood.
"It's been an exciting few days," said Davies, who took over the reins from Andy Cale after Saturday's Welsh Premier title win and who gets married in Cornwall on Saturday.
"The squad has been fantastic this season and I wanted to give as many of the lads as possible a chance to share the glory in the final.
"They didn't let the club down and the players who deserved a start were terrific."
Nineteen-year-old full back Sean Jones was making only his third full appearance for the club after a loan spell at Cefn Druids, while fellow scholarship products Ryan Marriott and John McKenna were also in the starting line-up.
And it was a great night for double goal scorer Seargeant, whose first season with TNS has been dogged by injury.
Tommy Holmes skippered the side for the night, while fellow stalwarts Steve Evans, Scott Ruscoe and Barry Hogan were happy to take a back seat for once.
And, despite the enforced absence of strikers Chris Sharp and Matthew Berkeley, their team-mates with an average age of less than 24 showed the future potential and strength in depth of the squad.
