Lack-lustre ladies still lift the cup

TNS Ladies lifted the Shropshire County Cup with a 2-0 victory over Allscott at Shrewsbury Town's Prostar Stadium.

Unable to find their usual fluency, the girls should have gone in at the break four or five goals clear but were denied by a mixture of great saves by the Allscott keeper and some poor finishing.
A great low strike from Chloe Mapp was the highlight of a very poor half to forge a 1-0 interval lead and, after some plain talking during the interval, we sent our players out expecting more desire and urgency.
But the second half followed the same pattern as the first, with TNS looking lack-lustre and unable to string a few passes together.
To their credit, Allscott were well organized and battled all match, but with their lone striker up front they were unable to force keeper Angela Birkett into any sort of save.
But with just a one goal advantage the contest remained very tense until the bench showed faith in the youngsters with 25 mins to go.
Sophie Davies was introduced closely followed by young keeper Izzy Foster and midfielder Chloe Wilkinson and Emily Ridge gave TNS some breathing space with a second goal after 77 minutes.
Alicia Robinson then rattled the crossbar with a free kick from 25 yards and, never looking threatened at the back, TNS saw out the remainder of the game.
It's a strange feeling for us to have won a cup final but not being able to take any satisfaction out of it.
The girls have been playing so well of late, but they found it hard to even celebrate after this performance - perhaps they just froze on the big occasion.
