Steve Goodwin
WELSH Premier goalkeeper of the year Steve Goodwin has made the shock switch from Welshpool to arch-rivals Newtown.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper agreed terms with the Latham Park club this week to become Roger Preece’s first signing after an ever-present season with Welshpool Town.
Last season Goodwin won rave reviews and attracted interest from a host of rival clubs.
Delighted Newtown chairman Phil Trenbath beamed: "Without doubt Steve could have got more money from other clubs but has been impressed by the set-up at Newtown."
Goodwin will be joined by No 2 Martin Poole and reserve keeper Aaron Warwick in specialist sessions led by goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins of Shrewsbury Town and Wolves.
Trenbath added: ‘Steve is a tremendous keeper with lots of potential and we will be pooling resources into helping him improve.
"Part of the club’s new strategy is to identify local talent and help them achieve their ambitions. Steve wants to break into the professional game and we want to help him."
Further signings are expected next week but Trenbath has called for patience from the Latham Park faithful.
"The appointment of Roger Preece was the first major part of the jigsaw and the arrival of Steve Goodwin for next season is just the first step in rebuilding for next season.
"It will take a couple of years but this signing represents Newtown Football Club heading in the right direction."
