Martin Naylor
has been ruled out of the Uefa Cup
first leg in Sweden |
INFLUENTIAL wing back Martin Naylor and central defender Steve Evans have been
ruled out of Saints' squad for the Uefa Cup tie in Sweden on Thursday.
Naylor picked up an ankle injury in training and has been ordered to rest for
seven days.
He may well recover in time to face Osters IF in the second leg at Wrexham,
but Steve Evans looks certain to miss both stages of the tie with an injured
jaw, also sustained in training.
The experienced Colin Alcide could step into Evans's shoes in the Varendsvallen
Stadium alongside Jimmy Aggrey.
The 32-year old is a utility player who was a target man in manager John Beck's
sides at Lincoln City and Cambridge, but can also operate in midfield or defence.
Barry Hogan has already deputised at wing back and could fill the hole left
by Naylor's unavailability.
In addition to the remaining 13 contracted players who will travel to Vaxjo,
TNS will take former Manchester United trainee keeper Paul Gibson, ex-Tranmere
youth Jamie McGuire, young Bangor midfielder Mark Connolly, former Bradford
Park Avenue youngster Nathan James and striker Taurean O'Sullivan, who joins
the club's scholarship programme next season.
The management and players fly out to Copenhagen on Tuesday morning and will
travel by coach to Sweden.
Squad: Doherty, Gibson, Holmes, Alcide, Aggrey, Taylor, Ruscoe, Hogan, Davies,
Beck, Leah, Wilde, Toner, Ward, Wood, McGuire, Connelly, O'Sullivan, James. |
