SHREWSBURY repeated last year's 3-0 success over Saints, courtesy of an injury time goal from Jody Banim.
But the damage was done in the first half by winger Sam Aiston who twice provided goals for his team-mates.
After just 10 minutes he went on a surging run from midfield before crossing from the right for Dutchman Sergio Ommel to send a glancing header into James Coates' far corner.
Just before the half-hour, Aiston reverted to his traditional left wing role to beat Tommy Holmes' despairing tackle and cut inside to set up Ryan Lowe for an 18-yarder.
TNS matched their League Two opponents in most areas and often dominated the midfield.
But they were unable to put the finishing touch to any of their approach work, with Mike Wilde seeing a shot well saved by Joe Hart and another deflected for a corner.
Coates twice came to Saints' rescue, saving at the feet of Colin Cramb after a through ball from Lowe and beating away Fitzpatrick's free kick.
TNS pressed harder after the break with Beck seeing his shot saved and Aggrey heading narrowly wide from a corner.
Barry Hogan's shot was beaten away and John Toner had a penalty appeal denied after going down in the box.
Simon Davies sparked several good moves after coming off the bench and Scott Ruscoe was unlucky to see a powerful free kick stopped by Hart.
But in a final flourish, the Shrews broke quickly and Banim latched on to Ommel's diving header to notch the third.
