WILDING JOINS WELSHPOOL
SHREWSBURY Town's current player of the year has signed for Welshpool Town.
Pete Wilding has signed a one-year deal with the Welsh Premier League side after failing to agree a new contract with Shrewsbury.
Ironically, it means 34-year old Wilding's football career has come full circle since started out in the semi-professional game at Maes-Y-Dre as a 17-year-old.
The player received an offer of a 12-month contract from Hereford supremo Graham Turner after impressing during a pre-season game last week.
But the versatile utility player has decided to go part-time so he can continue working in the construction industry.
Wilding said: "I've weighed a few things up with my business and with working and playing part time and I've decided to join Welshpool.
"They've offered me a decent package down there so I signed on Saturday and I'll be having a crack at it with them next year.
"They struggled last year but they've learned from it and are trying to make more of an effort this year.
"They've got good financial backing, an enthusiastic committee and management team and they are hoping to attract a couple more players.
"I know it's a drop in standard but it's a new challenge - I'm not just going there to pick up a bit of money, I'm going there to try and help turn them around," added the former Telford and Newtown man.
Wilding, who has been training with Welshpool for a fortnight and will make his debut in a friendly at Ludlow tomorrow night, thanked the club for their patience while he agonised over leaving Shrewsbury after six years' service.
"Welshpool understood my situation because deep down if Shrewsbury had have come back with a better offer I would still be there," he admitted.
Welshpool have also replaced 'keeper Steve Goodwin by signing Steve Brown, an 18-year old from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Former Port Vale defender, Paul Byrne, reported to have signed for Barry Town, is also training with the Lilywhites.
