After conquering Connah's Quay, TNS face minnows Penrhiwfer in round three of the Welsh Cup
ON PAPER, Saints have been handed an easy task in the draw for the Welsh Cup third round, against south Wales minnows Penrhiwfer.
The lowest-ranked of the clubs remaining in the competition, the Welsh Leaguers originally didn’t even make the second round draw after a mix-up at FAW headquarters.
Trailing 2-0 at home to Llanwern with two minutes left of their first round tie, the Tonypandy-based club pulled one goal back before a PA reporter phoned for the score to be told “2-1 with one minute left”.
That scoreline went through as the result – but although Pen then levelled the tie in the final minute before going on to win 4-2 in extra-time, the FAW used the PA results to frame the second round draw before club officials pointed out the mistake.
Currently in their first season in the Welsh League Third Division and occupying sixth place, Penrhiwfer - who beat Caerau Ely 2-0 away in the second round - must also travel from south Wales to Treflan.
“We would rather be playing the tie at home, but we’ve already caused two upsets and are looking forward to the biggest day in the club’s history,” says club secretary Philip Jones.
And 40-year player/boss Paul Evans is no stranger to the top flight of Welsh domestic football, having played as a striker with Inter Cardiff, Cwmbran Town, Ton Pentre, Barry Town, Ebbw Vale and Aberystwyth in a career which brought 122 league goals - his 27 goals in season 1993/4 a club record for Inter.
The draw has generally been kind to the Welsh Premier League clubs, with only Porthmadog v Cwmbran and Airbus v Afan Lido set to face each other.
