SWEEPING CHANGES ON THE WAY AT BARRY
Barry Town
BARRY Town Football Club could be under new ownership by the end of the week following the departure of chairman John Fashanu.
And the player exodus continued today with the departure of left sided defender/midfielder Paul Byrne.
Fashanu's right-hand-man and the club's financial director, Sanjay Patel, has decided to leave the club, while chief executive Kevin Green is also expected to stand down.
According to the South Wales Echo, a new group of businessmen may be in charge by the weekend, and they are expected to put the club's financial future ahead of prizes on the field.
Some of their proposals include:
- Success in the League of Wales will not be the top priority this season.
- This season's Champions League appearance could be the last for up to five years.
- Wholesale changes to the playing staff.
- Creditors will come before players and trophies.
- The Academy School, which was made mandatory to play in Champions League by Uefa, could be shelved.
A leading figure heading the new group said: "It's no good any longer for people to just smile problems away, it needs to be sorted out now.
"We are not just going to take one step back to take two forward, it's more like five steps back.
"We need to get this club back on a even keel before we go any further. There has been too much talk and not enough action in the past."
An insider at the club said: "Things are changing on a daily basis, you do not know what is going on.
"It is very unsettling for everybody involved at club, who just want to get on with playing football."
Meanwhile, Paul Byrne has left the club and signed for Southport.
He joins goalkeeper Mark Ovendale (to York City), left back Gary Lloyd (Newport) and midfielder Jon French (Weston-super-Mare), who have already left the club.
Byrne had only recently joined the Dragons from Port Vale and had not played a competitive game.
Only last week, he was reported to be training at Maes-Y-Dre with Welshpool Town and scored a brace in a 6-2 friendly win over Aberystwyth Reserves at the weekend.
Barry are reported to be still in negotiations with Jamie Jenkins over a new deal, with Brown admitting that signing players with the boardroom instability at Jenner Park has proved difficult.
There are also reports that striker Jamie Moralee is unsettled and may be the target of Conference club, Forest Green.
