Roger Preece is as surprised as most at Newtown's rapid rise up the league table
ROGER Preece is not getting carried away by Newtown's rapid rise up the Welsh Premier League table.
Ahead of today's home clash with struggling Port Talbot, the Robins find themselves in third position after six straight victories.
"We've gone up the league very quietly and all of a sudden people are starting to notice where we are," Preece said.
"I was surprised when I looked at the table, but its where we finish I'll be judged on.
"Last season we started well and then went 12 games without a win. Football can bite you on the backside sometimes."
Preece says his side needs to guard against complacency. "Port Talbot have lost two important cup matches in the space of a few days, so everyone will be expecting us to win.
"But it's never as simple as that in football and we need to have the right mental approach."
The Robins face another test of their credentials on Tuesday night when they travel to Treflan to face league leaders TNS.
