MP for Montgomeryshire, Lembit Opik, has been appointed parliamentary spokesperson for the Welsh Premier League.
League Secretary, John Deakin said “ I am absolutely delighted that Mr Öpik has offered his assistance to the League.
He was particularly helpful last year in persuading the BBC to carry our results on BBC One’s Final Score programme and also on Radio Five Live Sports Report.
This in itself enhanced the League’s profile, and I look forward to working with him for the future benefit of the League and Welsh Football.”
Mr Öpik said “I’ve been working with members of the Board for over a year.
My goal has been to help promote and improve the status of the Welsh Premier League - and beyond. Two particular aims are to build the television and media coverage of the competition, in both the English and Welsh languages and to get more funding to develop the grounds throughout Wales.
“When it comes to support available, Welsh clubs are the poor relation in the United Kingdom. So, we are formulating a list of ambassadors to promote the Welsh Premier League. They will highlight the development role that the clubs play.
If we’re successful, the real winner will be Welsh football.”
