PLENTY TO PONDER AFTER VICS' REVERSE

Pre-season friendly
Sat 6 August 2005: Away - Victoria Stadium

TNS have yet to find any form after the derring-do of their Champions League games with Liverpool.
Pre-season results are largely academic, but a 1-0 reverse in the impressive, if unfinished Victoria Stadium, left management duo Ken McKenna and Andy Cale with plenty to ponder.
Only Steven Beck and keeper Ged Doherty enhanced their reputations in a lethargic performance, littered with uncertain defending, erratic passing and a total lack of cutting edge upfront.
Another poor 45 minutes from the usually reliable Steve Evans saw him replaced at half-time, with Phil Baker's arrival adding some much needed resolution to the rearguard.
By then Saints were deservedly in arrears, although Jonny Allan's 23rd minute winner owed as much to good fortune as skilful execution.
Jon McCarthy slipped a superb through ball to the frontman, who saw his initial shot well parried by Doherty but, despite being on his backside, Allan managed to hook the rebound over the keeper's head.
It was no more than Vics deserved after dominating an opening stanza in which Doherty saved well from Mike Byrne, although Michael Wilde saw one good effort turned away by home stopper Kris Rogers.
Play was more even after the break, but Saints' only real chance arrived on 65 minutes when Beck worked himself a good opening only to balloon his shot over the bar.
TNS nearly conceded again on the final whistle but Chris Gaghan's effort deflected off Chris King and onto the crossbar.
"Champions League, you're having a laugh" came down from the home terrace. It might have been a bit harsh, but Saints have much to work at before the campaign starts in earnest.
