TNS win 7-6 on penalties
Welsh Youth Cup
Saturday 4th October 2003, Away
SAINTS' Welsh Youth Cup campaign got off to a flying start in the shadow of the BAE Airbus factory in north Wales.
Level at 2-2 after extra-time, the game went to penalties and with the shoot-out in sudden death at 6-6, a ballooned Airbus spot kick gave TNS the opportunity to win the tie.
Neil Prescott had missed a vital penalty in extra-time, but he redeemed himself by calmly striking his kick into the top right-hand corner.
Key to the win was Saints' rigid discipline in the face of considerable intimidation from a physical and determined Airbus outfit.
The hosts had nosed ahead in the first-half with a scrappy goal, but TNS were level a minute after the break.
Dan Hamer raced onto a long clearance before sliding home from a tight angle.
The match seemed to be drifting from Saints' grasp as Airbus again notched an untidy goal from a deep corner.
However, TNS didn't allow their heads to drop and, with only minutes remaining, Neil Prescott arrived onto a dropping ball to smash a superb arcing shot from 25 yards into the top left hand corner to level the scores once again.
It was TNS who stayed cool for the penalty shoot-out for a well-deserved and morale-boosting win.
TNS: Edwards, Prescott, Anderson, Blakemore, Lally, Morgan (Davies 75) [Lawrence 89], Mullins, Jones, Fellows, Hamer, Evans.
