TNS eased into the League Cup's last eight with a superb strike from Steven Beck and a somewhat flukey effort from Michael Wilde.
But the victory was achieved at a cost as manager Ken McKenna's injury woes mounted, with winger John Lawless taken to hospital at half-time with a suspected broken foot.
After Wilde had gone close in an early attack, Welshpool thought they had taken the lead when Kenny Burgess fired into an empty net after Gethin Lloyd had dispossessed Gerard Doherty, but referee Huw Jones ruled a foul.
Two minutes later it was the Saints who were ahead when Beck fired a tremendous 35-yard volley, although keeper Danny Jones may have lost the shot in the low sunlight.
Steve Rogers' attempted lob went just over the bar for the Lilywhites and Calvin Davies brought a good save from Doherty, before Burgess saw his effort hit the crossbar.
But Wilde virtually sealed matters three minutes before the break when his right wing cross-cum-shot took a deflection to beat Jones into the top corner.
Although Scott Ruscoe almost added a third when one-on-one with Jones and Steve Evans sent two headers narrowly wide, the match petered out as a spectacle with TNS happy to sit on their lead and Welshpool unable to raise a penetrative attack.
But McKenna's main worry will be finding 14 fit players for the trip to Porthmadog on Saturday.
