Welshpool Town 1-2 TNS
Vauxhall Masterfit Welsh Premier League
Monday 26 December 2005: Away - Maesydre
GERARD McGuigan cast himself in the role of Scrooge at Maesydre, but
the Welshpool keeper failed to stop TNS surging 12 points clear at the top of
the league.
Goals in each half from Michael Wilde and Steve Evans secured the win, and Port
Talbot's home defeat made it an even happier Christmas for Ken McKenna's men.
TNS dominated for much of the game and, after McGuigan had kept them at bay almost
single handed, he failed to cut out a Tommy Holmes cross and Wilde pounced to
prod the ball over the line.
A superb double save from first Jamie Wood and then Wilde prevented Saints from
doubling their half-time advantage, with Welshpool virtually without a shot on
goal.
A burst upfield from Marc Lloyd Williams ended with a shot just wide before TNS
pulled further ahead. A Scott Ruscoe free-kick was cleared to Evans on the left
and he curled his shot from just inside the by-line over McGuigan and into the
far corner.
The Lilywhites rallied late on when Steve Rogers held off defenders before placing
his shot across Gerard Doherty and into the far corner.
But despite a couple of late scares, TNS resisted Welshpool's rugged second-half
tactics to go into the New Year where they started the old, on top of the league. |
