TNS 1-0 Port Talbot Town
Welsh Premier League
Saturday 14 January 2006: Home - Treflan
TNS opened up a 14-point gap at the top of the Welsh Premier but it was hard work against Port Talbot.
The appropriately-named Steelmen almost played their game plan to perfection and it took the Saints 84 minutes to break down their resolve.
The visitors’ rearguard was finally breached when a defensive clearance fell to Chris King, who hammered the ball past static keeper Neil Thomas from 20 yards.
In truth, Talbot also caught the Saints on an off day as they struggled to win the midfield battle or create chances. And the South Walians could well have snatched the lead themselves during their only real spell of attacking play mid-way through the second half.
The combined efforts of keeper Gerard Doherty and Barry Hogan were required to scramble away a header from Luke Bowen and Matthew Rees should have done better when he headed over in front of goal from Leigh de Vulgt’s right wing cross.
Once in the lead, TNS nearly added more with Marc Lloyd Williams’ header denied by a one handed save from Thomas and the keeper kicking away to safety from another Jiws raid.
Manager Ken McKenna was pleased with his side's performance. "They came here with a game plan and stuck everybody behind the ball. It was important we remained patient and waited for an opportunity and we did - in many ways it's more satisfying than a five-nil win," he said.
