GOALS DRY UP FOR TNS LADIES
TNS Ladies 1-2Leicester City
Midland Women's Combination League
Sunday 16 Apri 2006: Home - Baschurch
After the previous Sunday's goal feast against Wrockwardine Wood Jacs Ladies in the County Cup, TNS Ladies might wish they had saved some goals as they slipped to another league defeat in the Easter Sunday sunshine at Walford College.
TNS began brightly and controlled the early stages with short and precise passing, especially from midfielders Sarah Parton and Sally Jones. However, it was Leicester who took the lead against the run of play in the 14th minute when Laura Woodford wrong-footed the TNS defence on the edge of the box and fired past keeper Bev Highfield.
The game then became more even with City's Jess White and Laura McCormick probing the hosts' defence midway through the half. TNS were unlucky not to level on 38 minutes when Trish Jones was left with a one on one with City keeper Laura Messenger who brilliantly saved Jones' shot from just outside the box.
That save was to prove vital as the visitors went 2-0 up in the 53rd minute with a breakaway goal when good work from Sarah Clarke found the unmarked Woodford 10 yards out and she volleyed past Highfield.
Good efforts by Natalie Poole and Jane France found Messenger in great form before TNS pulled a goal back in the 78th minute. A superb pass from Jones found Jemma Lloyd on the left and she cut in past defender Anna Rudkin and blasted a rocket shot from just inside the corner of the box past Messenger into the top right hand corner.
TNS pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages without success and it was City who returned home with all 3 points.
