WEAKENED TNS FALL AT ABERYSTWYTH
Alfie Carter fires in a first-half shot on his return from injury.
Aberystwyth Town 2-0 TNS
Vauxhall Masterfit Welsh Premier League
Tuesday 25 April 2006: Away - Park Avenue
A MAKESHIFT Saints line-up ended the league season on an inauspicious note with a defeat at Park Avenue.
Missing eight regulars either injured or rested ahead of Sunday's challenge cup final at the same venue, manager Ken McKenna handed Welsh Premier debuts to youth duo Adam Hobson and Tyson Eyo, while Alfie Carter made his long-awaited return after six months on the sidelines.
But despite being camped in their opponents' half for most of the game, TNS were undone by two doubtful refereeing decisions which resulted in goals for the lively Luke Sherbon with Aberystwyth's only shots on goal all night.
From a breakaway move just after the hour, referee Neil Morgan adjudged that a foul had been committed on the edge of the box, although he was 40 yards away at the time. As Gerard Doherty arranged his wall, Sherbon smacked the free-kick into the top corner.
And an 83rd minute penalty against Phil Baker also appeared to be harsh, allowing Sherbon to net from the spot.
John Toner had been denied by home keeper Richard Morgan as early as the third minute and saw another effort hit the post, with Alfie Carter and debutante Hobson narrowly wide.
The introduction of Mike Wilde and Nicky Ward early in the second half put the Seasiders under more pressure, but TNS just could not find a way through.
• Marc Lloyd Williams missed the game after wife Heidi gave birth to their fourth child, a boy born in England! Jamie Wood will be out for up to six months after suffering cruciate knee ligament damage in Saturday's game against Llanelli.
