WILDE MAKES IT A DOUBLE
Hat-trick hero Michael Wilde with the Loosemores Challenge Cup.
Port Talbot Town 0-4 TNS
Loosemores Challenge Cup Final
Sunday 30 April 2006: Park Avenue, Aberystwyth
MICHAEL Wilde led the way with a hat-trick as TNS clinched a Welsh Premier League and Cup double at Park Avenue.
The result was never in doubt from as early as the seventh minute, when Robert Cockings miskicked a clearance to John Toner, who passed for Nicky Ward to score from eight yards.
Toner was also instrumental in the second after 16 minutes, dinking over the top of the Port Talbot defence for Wilde to deliver into the top corner of Steffan Rogers' net.
The Steelmen were constantly on the back foot against a dominant Saints and, although Chris Pridham went close with a curling shot, Ward saw a shot well saved as TNS went in search of the killer punch.
Immediately on the restart, Wilde hit a post from Alfie Carter's pass, but the third goal arrived on the hour when Wilde headed in following a quickly taken free-kick by Ward and John Leah.
Wilde hit the bar following up a Rogers' parry from Leah's shot, but completed his hat-trick nine minutes from time with a simple tap-in after great work down the left by Carter.
The win capped a superb season for the Saints who now have a month off before returning to prepare for the Uefa Champions League.
"They were all magnificent and we played some fantastic football on a terrible pitch, one of the worst we've played on all season," said manager Ken McKenna.
"I asked the players for a big performance to finish the season and I certainly got one.
"It caps a great season for us and I will now be sitting down with Mike Harris to discuss the comings and goings for next season."
