TNS Ladies parade the Shropshire Cup which they won last month with victory over Shrewsbury Town at the Gay Meadow.
TNS Ladies 4-2 Chesterfield
Midland Women's Combination League
Sunday 7 May 2006: Home - Baschurch
TNS Ladies completed their home campaign with a win against Chesterfield Ladies at Walford. Despite the scoreline, they didn't have it all their own way against the Derbyshire side who needed to win to avoid being relegated.
TNS started confidently, playing the ball around the park and they soon tested Chesterfield keeper Emily Clement with shots from the edge of the box by Sally Jones on four minutes and Kate Challinor three minutes later. Laura Winde went close at the other end when her shot was saved by TNS keeper Bev Highfield before TNS took the lead in the 20th minute. Natalie Poole's pass found Challinor unmarked just outside the box and, having spotted Clement off her line, lobbed the ball home.
TNS almost added to their lead minutes later when Challinor's brilliant cross from the right found Sarah Martin seven yards out who just failed to get a touch but the ball fell to Jemma Lloyd, who rounded defender Hayley Mills before seeing her shot from 10 yards tipped over by Clement. Then in the 32nd minute another great cross from the right by Challinor found Jones just outside the area and she sent a first time volley screaming past Clement's right hand into the top corner for 2-0.
There were no further goals before the break but Chesterfield, needing to get back into it, upped the tempo in the early stages of the second half and pulled one back in the 54th minute when Amanda Reeve's right wing cross was headed in by Christina Skill. TNS restored their two-goal margin in the 60th minute when Poole's superb defence splitting pass found Challinor just inside the right hand corner of the box who hammered her shot under the oncoming Clement to make it 3-1.
A near carbon copy of that goal put TNS 4-1 up in the 72nd minute with Poole's pass setting up Challinor to complete her hat-trick. Chesterfield kept battling away with moves down both wings but the TNS back four held firm. The visitors eventually pulled another goal back to make it 4-2 in the 83rd minute when Anna Perks' 30 yard crossfield ball found Robyn Horton who beat the offside trap before giving keeper Highfield no chance with a shot from eight yards.
After a first season at this level which saw them lead the table for a time before their promotion hopes faded away, TNS Ladies finish in fourth place in the Midlands Combination but will no doubt be pushing for league honours next season.
