SAINTS NEED AIRFIELD LIFT-OFF
LOOSEMORES LEAGUE CUP GROUP STAGE
Tuesday 21 August 2021 / The Airfield / 7.30
AIRBUS UK BROUGHTON v THE NEW SAINTS
Mike Wilde gets in a shot during last season's 3-1 League Cup win at The Airfield.
THE Saints will need to turn-in a much improved performance to take the spoils from Tuesday night's visit to The Airfield, and restore some of their self-esteem after a poor showing in Friday night's Welsh Premier opener at Druids.
There were few positives from a ragged display which ended in a 1-0 defeat, apart from a man-of-the-match debut from former Hyde United centre-half Michael Taylor.
He might be excused for wondering what he had let himself in for as his team mates produced some powder-puff football which never looked likely to open-up a resolute Cefn Druids' defence.
There will be little margin for error in this year's League Cup, which sees each club play just four games in the group stage, instead of the marathon programme they faced last season.
And the Wingmakers are likely to field a far stronger side than the ones that capitulated 11-0 at Treflan and 3-1 at The Airfield as TNS reached the quarter-finals.
Although Phil Baker and Chris King are nearing fitness, they may not be risked on Tuesday night, while reports suggest that John Toner and Ronnie Morgan are still not ready for action.
It was difficult to see where goals were going to arrive from on Friday night and, if left-back cover Mark Davies has recovered from shin splints, a move further forward for Alfie Carter would be a likely option as manager Ken McKenna shuffles his depleted pack.
