BLUEBIRDS CAN EXPECT A BACKLASH
PRINCIPALITY WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE
Saturday 1 September 2021 / Park Hall / 2.30pm
THE NEW SAINTS v CAERSWS FC
Caersws duo Andy Thomas and Hugh Clarke argue the toss with ref Phil Southall after conceding a penalty in the 2-1 defeat at Treflan last season.
A VISIT from Caersws heralds a new era for The New Saints on Saturday - the first game for the club at its new Park Hall home and the first-ever Welsh Premier game to be played on artificial turf.
The Bluebirds can expect a backlash from the Saints who will be aiming to christen the Oswestry venue with a winning start as they languish at the foot of the table after successive defeats at NEWI Cefn Druids and Aberystwyth.
Despite the poor start, manager Ken McKenna remains confident: "We are only two matches into the season and there are 32 to go.
"We need to put a few things right and then watch us perform," he says.
With the club only receiving the FAW's green light to move to the new stadium on Thursday afternoon, McKenna has also covered all the bases. "I had no idea where we would be playing, so we have trained at Park Hall and on grass to prepare for every eventuality," he added.
Caersws have seen the departure of Mickey Evans in the close season, with Mike Barton appointed manager. A home defeat to Airbus last week has emphasised the size of the task facing the ex-TNS keeper, who has lost several stalwarts as he rebuilds his team.
Former TNS Reserve Nathan Prodger may figure up front alongside Graham Evans, who had a brief but injury-ruined spell with the Saints the season before last.
Barton also hopes to include former Newtown and Welshpool winger Justin Wickham in his squad and says: "We must be 100% better than against Airbus when defensively we were all over the shop.
"It will be a difficult game and a special occasion to be the first opposition for TNS at their new home."
