AIRBUS GLOVEMAN DOWN BUT NOT OUT
Andy Hughes is hoping to be fit for the FAW Premier Cup on Tuesday night.
AIRBUS keeeper Andy Hughes is on the road to recovery after being stretchered off in the 2-1 defeat at Rhyl on Friday night.
The 23-year-old lay unconscious for several minutes after going down bravely at the feet of former Wingmaker Craig Jones and being caught in the face by a knee.
Similarities have been drawn with the incident that left Chelsea's Petr Cech with a skull fracture but, in Hughes’ case, it resulted in an ambulance journey to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, treatment for concussion and 15 stitches to close a deep gash over his left eye.
The former Newtown and Nomads' gloveman is philosophical about the injury, which he reckons was a pure accident.
"So what? Strikers want to score and keepers want to stop them. Sometimes that means going in when you know it's going to hurt but that's part of the game," he told the Flintshire Chronicle.
"Football is a physical game and if you take the physical side out then it would ruin it for both players and spectators. The Rhyl player meant no malice.
"All I care about now is getting the stitches out and making myself available for selection at the weekend. I will be going to Haverfordwest on Tuesday and hope the gaffer picks me but I'll still have the stitches in."
