WOOD FILLS THE SAINTS' STOCKING
PRINCIPALITY WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE
THE NEW SAINTS 1-0 ABERYSTWYTH TOWN
Saturday 22 Dec 2020 / Park Hall
Jamie Wood fires the only goal of the game to beat Aberystwyth.
JAMIE Wood played Santa to deliver a man-of-the-match display and the only goal of the game, ensuring The New Saints stayed top of the Welsh Premier tree and Aberystwyth went home to an empty stocking.
The 37th-minute goal lit-up an otherwise scrappy affair, Alfie Carter's through ball finding Wood, who beat Christian Edwards to fire into the far corner past a despairing dive from keeper Richard Morgan.
The Seasiders had started the brighter against a hesitant TNS and had strong penalty claims for handball from a Luke Sherbon shot turned down in the 10th minute, while Saints' keeper Paul Harrison was forced into a save from Aneurin Thomas after Duane Courtney had fouled on the edge of the box.
Geraint Passmore's header from a Sherbon corner was narrowly wide, but Wood's goal gave the hosts more confidence and they took the game to the Black & Greens after the break.
Phil Baker was just wide from long range with Steven Beck firing straight at Morgan from the same distance.
Further chances were few and far between at both ends, but only a good stop by Morgan prevented sub Carl Lamb from doubling the lead deep into injury time.
