WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE THE NEW SAINTS 2-1 BANGOR CITY
Sat 22 Nov 2020 / Park Hall
John Toner
celebrates his second goal with Alfie Carter, who provided the pass.
TWO goals in three minutes from super-sub John Toner kept The New Saints hot on the
heels of leaders Rhyl and Llanelli.
But it took the lack-lustre Saints 78 minutes to break down Bangor City's resistance at Park
Hall in a game the visitors had dominated for much of the time.
City finally ran out steam after failing to make the most of their possession and Toner's double
whammy ensured they left empty-handed.
When Scott Ruscoe's free-kick on the left was returned across the box, Michael Wilde's overhead kick was flicked on with his head by Toner to finally defeat keeper Paul Smith.
And the Citizens hardly had time to regain their composure before fellow sub Alfie Carter
got clear down the left and his inside pass was steered wide of Smith by Toner again.
Peter Hoy twice went close to giving the visitors the lead early in the first-half, with the
Saints failing to create a clear-cut opening until the 36th-minute, when Wilde should have
done better with a headed chance which was beaten away by Smith following Phil Baker's cross.
Craig Williams fired wide early in the second period with a Michael Walsh flicked shot from
a Les Davies cross just missing the target at the other end.
But, until the introduction of Carter and Toner, a goal looked unlikely for the
disappointing Saints, who were finally breached themselves deep into stoppage time by a 20-yard
volley from Sion Edwards.
