Interesting point made by a caller to talkSPORT this morning (it does happen occasionally) - why is it that when a player handles the ball into the net to try to cheat a goal he gets a yellow card, yet when one handles on the line to prevent a goal - or in this case outside the box - he gets a red (and in the former case a penalty against as well from which the chances of a goal resulting are I guess 80%+?)

In either case the player is seeking to gain a one-goal advantage for his side.

Just for once I'm not picking on refs here, they only do whatever the legislators tell them (well, some of them do...)

(Haven't had time to look up exactly what the Laws say but ths is what almost always happens)

This from the fans forum of a Unibond League club reviewing a game on Saturday:

Also at half time the referee admitted that he got the "corner" decision wrong just before half time. He said "I realised I probably got that wrong when their keeper threw the ball towards the corner flag"!

Let this be a lesson to you all

http://www.shropshirestar.co.uk/2007/03/life-ban-for-pitch-invader/

Don't ever lose your temper with an assistant referee...

(I presume the gentleman merely wanted to suggest to the linesman in question what he should do with his flag...?)

Hope you're sitting down Glyn..

I've found a lino who does assist the ref!!

Unfortunately I don't know her name, yes her name.

England Women 6-0 Russia Women, Milton Keynes Thursday 8th March 2007 for the record.

She was cute, late 20's and every time the ball went out she flagged before the ref made a decision rather than wait for the ref.

Needless to say the other lino (a bloke) was the normal standard, wait until 5 seconds after the ref decides then flag.

Should have got her name and telephone number for Liam I suppose. There again at late 20's I guess she was a bit young for Liam?

Andy D'Urso is a complete idiot.

He spent the whole of the Black Country Derby sitting on the fence. He didn't make a single big decision. If anything looked like a foul, especially by a Tesco shirt, he just let play go on.

It didn't matter too much though, in the end. The old gold & black have now won 6 on the bounce!

I've (justifiably) criticised refs I've seen following both TNS and Hednesford many times, but Mr Webb and Mr Furlong at Blackburn on Saturday take the biscuit.

Neither of them should ever be allowed to officiate at any game at any level ever again.

There's only millions of pounds at stake, if they can make a goal out of a ball which is stopped before it crosses the line by a man standing a yard offside they should both take up knitting.

The lino from Blackburn has just looked at this...

... and says it definitely crossed the line

I followed the link and the pic throwsp a question...

A nine yard penalty?

I know the keepers can move along the line but can they come yards of it?

I should think 90% plus of penalty shoot outs would have to be replayed if they have a look at the penalties saved by a keeper 3 yards off his line.

There again, the lino is normally 10 yards away on the goal line and as we know 10 yards away may as well be on the moon for most officials.

Hmmm. Linos have nothing else to watch for in a pen shoot-out - unlike a normal one when at least 6 players encroach within the 10-yards

http://www.thefa.com/TheFA/RulesAndRegulations/FIFALawsOfTheGame/Postings/2002/05/12119.htm

and no-one takes any notice.

I don't normally agree with tinkering with the Laws (Mr Mawhinney take note) but since this Law is universally ignored now (am I the only one who is bothered?) how about we apply the same Law to a "normal" pen as we do in a shoot-out, ie the other 20 players must all remain behind the half-way line.

Would make for an interesting foot-race in the event of the ball rebounding off the keeper....!!

learned a new chant from the Saddlers fans at MKD today - to the tune of Blue Moon, "**** refs, we always get **** refs...."

Nice one. We can use that!
