THERE
was a good attendance at a parents and players evening
at Walford and North Shropshire College on 25 June.
Already, 19 players have signed up for Saints' new
scholarship programme.
Presentations on the scheme were given by representatives
from the college and the club.
Total Network Solutions
Football Club, in partnership with Walford and North
Shropshire College, is due to establish a Football
Scholarship programme for the start of the 2003/4
season.
The programme's aim is to establish a comprehensive
educational programme leading to recognised qualifications
at further educational level to gifted footballers.
This
scheme encourages widening participation in education
by using football as a vehicle to educational development.
Academy scholars will be based at the College’s
Oswestry Campus for the educational part of their
programme whilst Total Network Solutions FC will be
the lead provider of football coaching.
The aim is to take between 16 to 20 boys into the
scheme for the 2003/4 academic year.
The scholars will receive coaching with UEFA-licenced
TNS coaches for three half days a week and are likely
to form the backbone of the College’s football
team.
They will play in the National Youth Academy’s
league on a Wednesday afternoon and for a TNS team
at the weekend.
Scholars will be able to access a range of College
courses and there will be strong links with the Shrewsbury
Town Academy, which is also based at the College.
