Five-star TNS extend Aber hoodoo
TNS ensured that Aberystwyth succumbed to their seventh successive league defeat at Treflan in what was the Saints seventh league victory on the trot. But for 44 minutes the Seasiders gave as good as they got in a half that saw neither keeper troubled, until a triple whammy in a five-minute spell put TNS in charge. Barry Hogan threaded a 44th minute pass through to Steven Beck who sent a superb chip over Richard Morgan to open the scoring. A minute later it was 2-0, as Scott Ruscoe skinned Aneurin Thomas down the left before sending his narrow angled shot in at the far post. Aber’s Jonathan Coates was so unimpressed with his skipper’s defending that the pair had to be pulled apart by team-mates. But earlier they had come close to scoring when good work by Luke Sherbon down on the corner flag ended with Nick Evans sending a searing drive across the face of Gerard Doherty's goal. Player/boss David Burrows came on at the break, but he failed to stem the green and white tide as poor defending allowed Steve Evans to cut the ball back from the by-line for Beck to drive his fourth goal in three games in the 48th minute. Although Glyndwr Hughes fired a shot over the bar from a quickly-taken Sherbon free-kick, it was all TNS and a superb move involving Jamie Wood, sub Michael Wilde and Ruscoe ended with Nicky Ward heading past Morgan at the near post. With the Aber defence under severe pressure, Morgan saved at the feet of Wilde and Saints had three penalty shouts turned down before Wilde broke past Burrows for the fifth. Only two fine saves from Morgan prevented Beck and John Toner from rubbing salt in the wounds in the dying moments. A comfortable win in a game where TNS never hit top gear, but were still too powerful for their opponents. |
