Saints grind out Quins' win

TNS duly won the points to restore their 16-point lead at the top of the league, but they failed to sparkle in the capital sunshine.
A dry and bumpy pitch was a mitigating factor as was a strong wind, which helped produce an error-strewn affair at the Leckwith Stadium.
It took the Saints half an hour to open up a young and inexperienced Quins' side who resisted doggedly and close TNS down around the pitch.
Jamie Wood had an early chance but was unable to control the bouncing ball after keeper Gareth Williams had lost out, while Nicky Ward headed across the face of goal after another Williams' miscue.
Ward shot straight at the keeper and then hit the post from a narrow angle with an intended cross.
The goal arrived from an unlikely source after Mike Wilde's shot was parried by Williams and Tommy Holmes was on hand to sweep the ball into the net for his first of the season.
Wilde headed against the bar before the second goal arrived five minutes before the break - Barry Hogan chose to cross instead of shoot, Wood's effort was saved by Williams and this time it was Wilde who picked up the pieces to score.
Soon after the resumption, Wood showed how just easy it was to open up the Quins' defence with a right wing run and cross which half-time sub Marc Lloyd Williams headed into an empty net with Williams stranded.
But TNS failed to add to their tally as Phil Baker fired narrowly wide. Lloyd Williams twice and Wilde had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside and both the frontmen also missed sitters from well inside the six-yard box.
Quins were down to 10 men in the 84th minute when Atif Bashir was sent off for a senseless head butt on Chris King, but the Quins escaped with a respectable scoreline which their lively performance had deserved.
